What Is It?
Reiki is an ancient healing system which involves the transfer
of health-giving energy (ki) from the practitioner (master) to
the patient to restore emotional and spiritual balance and allow
the body to heal itself. The name reiki is a Japanese term, “rei” meaning
universal essence, and “ki” meaning vital life-force
energy. Ki is equivalent to qi in traditional Chinese medicine.
Reiki masters learn how to channel energy through their hands via
a series of “attunements” to the reiki energy.
Reiki is thought to be derived from the healing systems
developed by Tibetan monks thousands of years ago.
The term reiki, however, wasn’t used until the
late 1800s when a Japanese scholar, Mikao Usui, who
had studied in Tibet, developed a system of healing
using the energy in his hands. Reiki was introduced
to the West by a Japanese-American woman, Hawayo Takata,
who trained in Japan as a grand master under one of
Usui’s students, Dr Shuriyo Hayashi.
How Does It Work?
Reiki practitioners believe that illness is caused by blockages
in the flow of vital life-force energy or ki. Reiki masters who
are “attuned” to this energy are able to transmit
it through their hands into the person being treated, removing
these blockages and allowing healing to occur. Reiki practitioners
do not diagnose illness and claim that the healing energy automatically
goes where it is needed.
Some researchers suggest that reiki induces a deep
state of relaxation which triggers the release of the
body’s natural painkilling chemicals.

What Happens During
Treatment?
During you initial visit you reiki practitioner will ask about
your health and your reasons for seeking treatment. You will lie
fully clothed on a padded table and the practitioner will place
his/her hands on or near your body at various positions, including
the head, abdomen, feet and back. The hands are held still for
four or five minutes (up to 20 minutes if a blockage is detected)
before moving them to a new position. Most people who have experienced
a reiki session feel a warmth or tingling from the practitioner’s
hands as the energy is channelled through them. The practitioner
does not use her/his own energy, and many practitioners feel more
energised themselves after a reiki session.
A reiki session will usually last for 60-90 minutes.
Length of treatment will vary depending on the problem.

What Is It Used
For?
Reiki can help relieve chronic pain caused by illnesses such as
arthritis and multiple sclerosis, and may help with emotional problems
such as depression and anxiety. It may also promote a more rapid
recovery from surgery or burns. Reiki has also been effective for
reducing stress in people suffering from cancer or AIDs.
Side Effects/Cautions
Reiki should not be seen as a replacement for conventional medical
care, but as a complementary therapy to other conventional or
alternative treatments.

The Reiki Sourcebook
Bronwen & Frans Stiene
If you teach Reiki, are a Reiki practitioner
or are just plain interested in Reiki itself,
then this book will take your knowledge of
Reiki to a whole new level!
The Reiki Sourcebook is the ultimate in up-to-date information
on everything Reiki. It is unbiased and clears up a lot of
the conflicting stories you often hear about Reiki.
My favourite part of the book is the section on Western and
Japanese techniques. There is so much detailed information
in this book that I know I will have it by my side constantly
so I can easily refer to it.
If you are a teacher of Reiki then you simply must have this
book in order to share the best information possible with
your students! If you are a Reiki practitioner this book
will expand your knowledge and help you to understand this
wonderful system of healing and where it came from and where
it is today. If you are not yet attuned to Reiki but are
thinking of becoming involved then this book will answer
any questions you may have about the the what's, why's and
how's of Reiki. - Maureen Oliver
